What is Mesophase? It describes a certain state of matter that is neither solid, nor liquid, but has properties of both. It describes LCD screens, but also describes us living beings. The special properties of mesophasic materials lie precisely in their in-betweenness. They have structure as well as flexibility and internal flow. Because of this, they are uniquely capable of holding and disseminating information. I hope over time to capture some of the properties of the mesophase here on this site, and that it grows organically into a sort of personal repository of thought, image and dream.
It's also a kind of statement about the kind of internet I miss and hope rises again from the ashes of the Corporate Hellscape internet.
About Me
✍ This site is a personal project of RB "Neoglyph." Depending on where you found this site you might know me personally or not. There's a sort of semi-permeable membrane 🦠 between my real self and this sort of digital self. Neoglyph is a not a pen-name so much as a screenname. Meaning one doesn't just write with it, but moves through a kind of digital space with it. That said, the point of view from which I write is not some virtual one, but an actual one of lived experience. As a sort of cerebral cis-male leftist mixed kid with esoteric leanings growing into middle age but still wondering about the world around me like a kid. 🧠
I'm an Elder Millenial 👴 who works in tech by day and does stuff like this by night. Grew up in the Rust Belt, went to college and studied political science with a mind to go into law but despite loving school I was majorly disillusioned by something I couldn't quite articulate at the time and decided to move to Southern California. I wasn't sure what I wanted, just that I wanted to do something creative instead of go to grad school and "work for the system." 💻 Eventually I landed in tech, very much working for the system after all was said and done, but eventually realizing that I was absolutely surrounded by creativity, by opportunities to create myself.
Now, I'm trying to use this space as a kind of creative project to synthesize all of my interests and preoccupations with philosophy, society, science, technology, art and spirit. What I was disillusioned by, I now have many ways to articulate. I wanted a space that was smoother and less striated and segmented by the academy, and took the first line of flight west. I didn't want to participate in the discourse of the academic, and speak on behalf of the Masters, papering over the emptiness of their signs. Now I think many more people are disillusioned than ever before in my lifetime, and now that the collective spell is breaking I hope that we can find each other and create a new type of community with new spells and new magics.
